As the anonymous narrator on ABC’s Pushing Daisies often says, “The facts are these.” The number of TV shows with voiceover narration has risen in recent years.

Exhibit A: Meredith Grey quotes.

While the writers’ strike may temporarily halt the yapping from characters across various TV shows, it’s a trend that appears to have staying power.

New series beginning this autumn with lots more narratives, according to the Ventura County Star, include Pushing Daisies and The CW’s Aliens in America and Gossip Girl. These shows join veterans My Name is Earl, How I Met Your Mother, Everybody Hates Chris, Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs, etc.

Meredith Grey has narrated Grey’s Anatomy since its 2005 inception, with some notable exceptions, in which other characters have narrated specific episodes.

Of course, Desperate Housewives, made omniscient narration a popular device in 2004 with dead Mary Alice telling us tales of Wisteria Lane from the beyond.

“It clearly worked in literature forever, and I think there are ways to use it intelligently” in TV, NBC Entertainment Co-Chairman Ben Silverman said.

He brought up the many funny Sex and the City quotes over the years as a use of narration as a device of “relaying the humor back to the audience. I think within the comedy, those voices are great ways to connect to the audience.”

On the flip side, CBS has few, if any, narrated series. CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler said she has concerns about its effect on viewers.

“I’m not a fan of voice-over narration. A lot of times it co-opts an audience’s ability to follow the action of the story by having somebody tell them what to feel, what to think,” she said in July. “I like it when it counterpoints what’s going on. You have to be really sensitive as to how and when and where you use it.”

Andy Dehnart, the writer and editor of RealityBlurred.com, thinks that the rise of reality TV shows in recent years has been a major instigator.

“Because reality shows only have real footage to work with, sometimes in order to craft a narrative arc, you have to substitute with a narrator to connect scenes that otherwise might not have film to connect,” he said. “Some reality shows overuse this, so you’re being reminded of things you’re actually seeing on the screen.”

Well, I covered this the other day when I talked about the strike and its effect on Grey’s Anatomy. But TV Guide has posted a comprehensive list of all the shows and how many are left to air until the strike is resolved.

Here’s what they’ve got on G.A. and Private Practice:

• Grey’s Anatomy: Eleven episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are three left.
• Private Practice: Ten episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are two left.

But I imagine these are not the only two shows you guys watch, so I’m posting the full list after the cut so you can start counting down.

Can’t wait until this strike is done. Sigh.

30 Rock: Ten episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are four left.

Aliens in America: Seventeen episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are 9 left.

Back to You: Nine episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are two left.

The Big Bang Theory: Eight episodes were produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are zero left.

Bionic Woman: Roughly nine episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are two left.

Bones: Twelve episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are four left.

Boston Legal: Fifteen episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are eight left.

Brothers & Sisters: Twelve episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are five left.

Carpoolers: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are seven left.

Cavemen: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are seven left.

Chuck: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Nine episodes have aired, so there are four left.

Criminal Minds: Roughly twelve episodes will be produced. Ten episodes have aired, so there are roughly two left.

CSI: Eleven episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are four left.

CSI: NY: Fourteen episodes will be produced. Nine episodes have aired, so there are five left.

Desperate Housewives: Ten episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are three left.

Dirty Sexy Money: Eleven episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are three left.

House: Twelve episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are four left.

Jericho: Seven episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are seven episodes left.

Las Vegas: Nineteen episodes will be produced. Nine have aired, so there are 10 left.

Law & Order: SVU: Fourteen episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are six left.

Life is Wild: Twelve episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are five left.

Lost: Eight episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are eight episodes left.

Medium: Nine episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are nine episodes left.

Men in Trees: Nineteen episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are 13 left.

My Name is Earl: Thirteen episodes will be produced (that includes two one-hour eps, which count double). Ten episodes have aired, so there are three left.

The New Adventures of Old Christine: Eight episodes have been produced. No episodes have aired, so there are eight left.

Numbers: Twelve episodes will be produced. Eight have aired, so there are four left.

The Office: Twelve half-hour episodes will be produced. Twelve half-hour episodes have aired, so there are zero half-hour episode left.

One Tree Hill: Twelve episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are twelve episodes left.

Prison Break: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are five left. (On hiatus ’til Jan. 14)

Private Practice: Ten episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are two left.

Pushing Daisies: Nine episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are two left.

Reaper: Ten to 12 episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are two to four left.

Samantha Who?: Twelve episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are six left.

Scrubs: Eleven episodes will be produced. Four episodes have aired, so there are seven left.

Shark: Eleven episodes will be produced. Nine episodes have aired, so there are two left.

The Shield: All 13 season-seven episodes will be completed. None have aired (the final season gets underway in ‘08), so there are 13 left.

Smallville: Fifteen episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are seven left.

Supernatural: Ten to 12 episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are three to five left.

Ugly Betty: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are five left.

In what is being billed as a major Grey’s Anatomy “event,” a massive tragedy hits Seattle Grace as an ambulance crashes and threatens the lives of not only the patient(s) inside, but the lives of the doctors and paramedics themselves.

The Chief and Dr. Bailey work tirelessly at the crash site trying to saves the lives of both the patients and the paramedics… although they encounter at least one man (see sneak previews) who refuses their treatment on controversial grounds.

Seth Green also guest stars as a character named Nick.

But that’s just the beginning of the drama that begins tomorrow, on Thanksgiving night, in the first half of a two-part episode, entitled “Crash Into Me, Part I.”

We’ve gotten to know more about Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) at the end of last season and the beginning of this one. Now it looks like he reaches a turning point when Ava shows up (again) and meets the new girl in his life - Lexie Grey.

Is a new Grey’s Anatomy love triangle developing between Dr. Alex Karev, Ava / Jane Doe / Rebecca Pope (Elizabeth Reaser, right) and Dr. Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh)?
